Cosmopolitan magazine have enlisted the help of two celebrity couples for their campaign to raise awareness of the charity CoppaFeel! ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The images recreate an iconic Rolling Stone Janet Jackson cover, with partners cupping their breasts in their hands to preserve the ladies’ modesty.
Spice Girls star Mel B stripped off with her producer husband, Stephen Belafonte, for the campaign; while Jorgie Porter teamed up with her Hollyoaks co-star boyfriend, James Atherton.
In accompanying interviews, the stars all speak of the importance of routinely checking for lumps and of encouraging the habit between family and loved-ones.
“I have three daughters and one stepdaughter,” said Mel. “So I’ll show them as they get older. My eldest, Phoenix, 13, does it already.” Husband, Stephen, declared that he happily assists his wife with the process, telling Cosmopolitan: “I’m a boob man so I had absolutely no problem doing this shoot or helping my wife check her breasts. What man wouldn’t like that? It’s a fun thing to do and so very important.”
Jorgie’s message was more of reassurance for women who are apprehensive about what they might find: “Checking your boobs can be scary – you don’t want to find anything. But it’s so important you do as it could save your life. James and I make it fun – plus, I check his bits too!”, while James added: “In the case of breast cancer, a simple check can prevent it spreading.”
Mel also spoke of a breast cancer scare she had experienced as a teen: “I found a lump when I was 17 and freaked out. It turned out it was nothing but it terrified me. Ever since, I’ve always been one for checking, then double checking.”
The full interview appears in the October issue of Cosmopolitan, which is on sale 13th September.
